Guidelines for Project Assignment, Milestone 1: Defining the Theme Teams

Milestone 1 (10%) is broken into two parts. You can start to do the reading for the second part (Tuesday 29 May) as soon as it is assigned, but make sure you have completed the first part I in time for Thursday May 24.

Before you start

  • Read and explore the Presidio maps, your brochure contents, and the Presidio Trust website: http://www.presidio.gov/.
  • Read Fowler, P. 2004 Landscapes for the World: Conserving a Global Heritage. WINDgather Press, Macclesfield, Cheshire, UK. Chapter 1, 12 (pdfs available for download in “Resources” area of the BSpace website). This reading is for Thursday 26 May.
  • During the course you will be reading in greater detail some of the Presidio public documents at http://www.presidio.gov/trust/documents/. But for Tuesday 29 May, you need to read/explore the following documents about Fort Winfield Scott Site Management Plans that are available for download in the Resources area of your BSpace site:
  • Fort Scott Contemplative Retreat. This is chapter 3 of the Presidio Trust Site management Plan when it took over the SF Presidio. http://www.presidio.gov/trust/documents/environmentalplans/ptmp.htm You can read what became of this plan in the same document online.
  • Fort Scott Creek and Gardens Visioning Plan

  • Read assigned article on your theme (to be read and used for discussion Tuesday 29 May). What is expected for the Milestone 1:

  • (May 24) Maximum one page, double spaced, based on your reading of Fowler chapters write one paragraph about each of our four themes and how they are documented at cultural heritage sites
  • (May 29) One page, double spaced, based on your reading of Fowler, the existing site management plans and your assigned theme literature, on how your theme can be addressed at the Presidio and Fort Winfield Scott. You will find it useful as part of this assignment to list the things (artifacts, plants, etc) that you would focus on to record for your theme.
  • (May 29) Choose one of the three areas of Fort Scott for focus
